Visit the GENERAL OVERVIEW & ITINERARY PAGE for more information about gear specifics, clothing, weather, etc.
While no knowledge of night photography techniques is required for this workshop, please understand this is not a Photo 101 class - you should have a decent working knowledge of your camera gear and how the Exposure Triangle (aperture, shutter speed & ISO) works. Please contact us with any questions or concerns BEFORE signing up for this workshop. Thanks.
The Team at Taylor Photography is excited to be offering a 5 day fall foliage landscape photography workshop in the San Juan mountains of Colorado. The San Juans are home to some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty in the United States, with classic mining towns like Ouray, Silverton, Ridgway and Telluride being located along scenic Routes 550 and 145. Incredibly photogenic areas like Red Mountain Pass, Crystal Lake, Last Dollar Road, Owl Creek Pass and others (some of which we will be visiting but have purposefully not listed in this description or included photographs of) really come alive in late September when the weather becomes more dramatic and the Aspens, Scrub Oak & Cottonwoods turn to golden yellows, oranges and reds.
We will be exploring these areas during sunrise and sunset to capture the essence of colorful Colorado during the best light of the day. At this time of year, sunrise occurs around 7AM and sunset occurs around 7PM. The fall foliage timing also coincides with the new moon phase in September 2020 so we will spending some time capturing some late season Milky Way and stars as time allows.
This is a comprehensive workshop with an emphasis on in the field shooting and chasing the best light that will consist of 5 days/nights of photography which will include 2 Processing sessions.
September 26: Afternoon meet and greet, sunset photography
September 27-29: Sunrise and sunset photography with mid-day break, possible night shoot
September 29-30: Possible sunrise / sunset photography, mid-day classroom instruction and image processing & critiques, group dinner
*We will talk with all participants regarding itinerary changes depending on weather conditions & forecast
We always suggest that participants try to arrive the day before a workshop begins and stay a day after the workshop ends to remain flexible with changing weather conditions - as we check local forecasts, sometimes it becomes inevitable that we will have better weather conditions just before or just after the scheduled workshop dates, in which case we will take advantage of the forecast and go shoot on those dates.
In The Field Photography: We will be covering the entire skill set of shooting during all times of day with our main focus being sunrises, sunsets and at night including the techniques involved in taking very long exposures for foregrounds to blend with sky shots and how to use LED panels strategically to illuminate landscape features. We will also be covering the process of shooting horizontal & vertical panoramas as time permits. Mike and Sonia will help each participant with composition, lighting, troubleshooting, etc.
Classroom Instruction: Our classroom time will consist of processing tutorials and techniques via Lightroom & Photoshop and some of our favorite plug-ins to create remarkable images. Bring your laptop with Lightroom and Photoshop installed to learn techniques for processing in the digital darkroom. We will also spend some time on image critiques. Mike will work with each participant on their images as we progress. Check out our Processing page for examples of what we'll be covering in class.
Home Base: Our home base for this workshop will be held at the Timber Ridge Lodge in Ouray where we have arranged for a block of rooms at a discounted rate. Please contact the motel at 970-325-4856 to reserve your room and tell them you are with the Mike Taylor Photography Workshop in September 2020. You are of course free to stay anywhere in the Ouray area. We will arrange for a conference room to be used on September 30 for our classroom / processing session.
Lodging, transportation and meals are not included in the investment amount. We will be carpooling to the photography locations.
More specific information regarding meet up time & location and a PDF covering the essentials of night photography will be sent out to participants via email well before the workshop date. All participants will receive a hard copy of the PDF handout to go over during our meet-and-greet session.
Physical Requirements: Boots or shoes with decent tread are necessary. Photography locations will be in areas with slightly uneven terrain including tree roots and rocks but nothing that should bother anyone who is in decent shape. Anyone who has balance issues should contact us before signing up. PLEASE NOTE: The elevation in Ouray is 7,800 feet and we may be exploring some areas that are close to 10,000 feet. If you are visiting this area from lower elevations or sea level you may want to arrive a couple days early to acclimate to the elevation changes.
