North Woods of New Hampshire - July 9 -11, 2018

3 Day Workshop with 2 Instructors

Visit the GENERAL OVERVIEW & ITINERARY PAGE for more information about gear specifics, clothing, weather, etc.

While no knowledge of night photography techniques is required for this workshop, please understand this is not a Photo 101 class - you should have a decent working knowledge of your camera gear and how the Exposure Triangle (aperture, shutter speed & ISO) works. Please contact us with any questions or concerns BEFORE signing up for this workshop. Thanks.

Taylor Photography is thrilled to team up once again with our good friend, fellow night shooter and photography instructor Garrett Evans of A G Evans Photography to offer a 3 day astrophotography workshop in the North Woods of New Hampshire. This workshop has been planned around the New Moon cycle to maximize the visibility of the features of the night sky. This region of northern NH is a great area for astrophotography, featuring very dark skies and an idyllic setting on the Connecticut Lakes and Lake Francis. Being above the 45th parallel also greatly increases the chances to view and photograph Northern Lights displays. There are also some terrific hiking opportunities like the Cohos Trail & waterfalls like Garfield Falls in the area and it is a great place to view moose & other wildlife.

This is a comprehensive workshop with an emphasis on post-processing that will consist of 2 nights and 3 days - approximately 10 hours of in the field photography and 15 hours of classroom tutorials & processing time. Check out our Processing page for some examples of what we will be covering in class.

NOTE: We will have both an iOptron SkyTracker and a Nodal Ninja NN4 Panorama Head on hand for folks to experiment with - the tracker is great for taking long exposures of 4-5 minutes to capture incredible clarity, depth & color in the Milky Way and the pano head makes it a breeze to shoot multiple images of the full sky in minutes.

July 9: Late afternoon  - meet and greet, discuss camera settings and features of the night sky - in the field photography 9PM-1AM

July 10: Afternoon - 1-6PM classroom instruction & image processing - in the field photography 9PM-1AM

July 11: Afternoon - 1-6PM classroom instruction & image processing

In The Field Shooting: In early to mid July the Milky Way appears vertically in the sky after sunset. We will be set up & shooting before astronomical sunset and through the night for approximately 4 hours. We will be covering the entire skill set of shooting at night including the techniques involved in taking very long exposures for foregrounds to blend with sky shots and how to actively and statically use different lighting to light paint features in the dark. We will also be covering the process of shooting horizontal & vertical panoramas. Mike and Garrett will take turns helping each participant with composition, lighting, troubleshooting, etc.

Classroom Instruction: Our classroom time will mainly consist of processing tutorials and techniques via Lightroom & Photoshop and some of our favorite plug-ins to create remarkable images. Bring your laptop with Lightroom and Photoshop installed to learn techniques for processing in the digital darkroom. We will cover Mike and Garrett's entire digital darkroom workflow from RAW file to finished image - from the basics of adjusting highlights & shadows, white & black levels, contrast, clarity, noise reduction, color balance, sharpening, lens corrections, graduated & radial filters, etc. to the more advanced techniques involved in layering, masking, and transforming as time permits. We will also go through detailed instructions regarding the capturing & processing of images featuring exposure blending, horizontal & vertical panoramas and star trails images as time allows. Mike and Garrett will work with each participant on their images as we progress. Check out our Processing page for examples. The planning and scouting of night sky shoots, including the apps that are instrumental for reconnaissance, will be covered as well.

Home Base: Our home base and the classroom instruction for this workshop will be The Glen at Bear Tree resort in Pittsburg. The Glen lodge and cabins are charming, well maintained facilities that we are proud to be affiliated with - we have arranged for a block of rooms at the resort with a discounted rate. You have a choice of a single room in the lodge or sharing a cabin - check out these links for more info and photos of the lodge and cabin accommodations. If you have a partner or are teaming up with someone for the workshop, the cabins are a great choice.
